Is racial tension still alive in the south?

Anyone who has seen images of (or lived in) the south during the 50's knows there was a lot of racial tension. Does that still exist today? In the west there are tensions between Hispanics and non-Hispanics, but is there tension in the South?

  1. Yes. When you have a bunch of rednecks driving around in their trucks with confederate flags hanging off the back and When Georgia has one hanging up on the highway, I'd say there should be racial tension.

  2. Yes there's racial tension all over the country, hence the things being said about Sen. Obama that aren't true as related to his name and ancestry.  There will always be a certain amount of racial, religious, ethnic tension because there will always be people who are insecure and who need to blame their failings and lack of success on someone else.  That's where most racial tension comes from. being so insecure that you have to feel that you're better than someone else in order to feel good about yourself.

  3. Yes, although thankfully overt lynchings and riots are largely a thing of the past. Legalized "lynchings" however are not (ex. Jena Six).

  4. YES. In the southern United States, racial tension is very much alive.  I live in Houston, Texas, and I can't drive to the store without seeing a confederate flag!! Its so disgusting.  I lived in Austin for 5 years...the most liberal city in Texas. Um PUH LEAZE yeah, it was diverse, but SOOO segregated.  There was a white part of town, a hispanic part, a black part....etc. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I love black people, but...." OMG it is so frustrating and I have to get out of the south!!

  5. I'm assuming that you are an American and that you believe your question is posted because you believe only Americans are on here.  They are not.

My instinctive reaction was to ask, 'South of Where, Dear?' But then I realised...........

In Peckham, Balham and Brixton I believe there is still some 'tensions', but not having been there in years now, I really don't actually know.
