Is range an accurate way to classify ones voice?

I mean wether it's soprano, alto, tenor or bass.

  1. range is the way you can classify yourself as one of the voices, but not the quality obviously.


  2. These ranges are dynamic. I consider myself, and I am considered by others, as a high soprano. However I can sing as low or lower than most altos. I am most comfortable and I sound best as a soprano, so that is where I am classified. So in a sense, no, it is not accurate, because saying someone is a soprano when they can easily sing below the staff isn't quite logical. But if you classify people by their highest level of comfort and best sound, then I would say that vocal ranges are a fairly accurate way of describing voices.
