Is range determined by the notes you can sing comfortably or the notes you can make noise on?

Question

I know tessitura is your "comfort zone," but is range the notes you could sing with good vocal tone and control or the notes you can produce at all? My guess is that if you put on your resume that you can sing up or down to a specific note, you better be able to not only produce the note but really sing it when they ask you, right?

the range is dected by the clearity and the notes you can hit without getting red or anything.
