  1. Q: Is rapid firing on a handgun bad for it?

A: I know of a man from my home-town who burned-out a Colt 1911's .45 acp barrel by doing just that.  He had a bunch of extra magazines and he just kept firing one mag after the other to see if his Colt would jam.  After two boxes of ammo he wore the barrel out (you could insert an unfired .45 acp into the barrel the wrong way!).  On a positive note, his Colt never did jam.  Go figure!

  2. As long as the gun is out of the break in period it wont hurt it. Unless you are somehow getting the barrel hot enough to warp it.

  3. No but it will jam it if you fire it on semi-auto  faster then a uzi.

**How did I get 3 thumbs down when the guy below said the exact same thing as me and he got 1 thumbs down?

  4. No, rapid firing is not bad for the semiautomatic handgun.  Just make sure that you have a good grip on it or it will jam up.  Shooting with a limp wrist will not allow the handgun to eject the spent casing and chamber a new round.

Be safe when you shoot like that.  Follow the basic rules of gun safety.

    Good Luck!

  5. Its OK in an emergency, but not at any other time.* It creates and causes rapid wear and tear on the handgun.*

  6. No and Yes ---- If you want to empty a magazine fast then go ahead... BUT DO NOT continue to load magazines and empty them out. It overheats the barrel and other parts....... Lets face it -- Guns are expensive so why overheat them and shorten there service life...  If you want to do the Miami Vice thing and blast thru a whole magazine of ammo then sure why not -- Its fun - I do it. What I dont do is continue to feed magazines until it jambs and / or the lubricating oil smokes. This will turn the lube oil into varnish and muck the interior components up......

  7. Yes and No.

Double taps, and tactical shooting (fast paced) doesn't hurt your gun that bad.

However, if you fire thousands of rounds, in rapid fire fashion in a day, it may cause excellerated wear on parts like the slide, hammer, firing pin, etc.

  8. The correct answer is yes. And no.

    The yes part -

Firing any gun too fast for too long will caused it to overheat. This could cause it to seize up or the barrel could get hot enough to start to melt. This is why military machine guns have multiple barrels like a Gatling gun or they have barrels that can be changed quickly.

    The no part -

You'd have to really work at it to damage a gun like that. In training demos I've frequently put 3 full mags (45 rounds) through a pistol in under 30 seconds. The gun gets very hot but to do any damage I'd have to keep up that rate of fire through a dozen or more magazines.

Since very few people will have that many loaded magazines to work with, I don't think its something you will have to worry about.

  9. It blows em' up.
