  1. It is said that Y2K was a bug or a virus that affected all systems in the world and all the computers would crash on the year 2000. [Y=year, 2K = 2000]. So, all the owners of computers were instructed to change the date of their coumputer to 2nd Jan 2000 on 30 Feb 1999, so the cmputer would actually not have the date of Y2K. ie., 1 Jan 2000.

Even after all this, it is unclear whether this bug really excisted or not.

  2. Y2K created lots of Jobs BUT no problems :-) Lots of IT companies did well due to this scare !

  3. It was just a hoax, created around the zero.It did create some jobs and some hysteria, most of us ignored it and kept on going.Nothing happened.

  4. Yes. Check this page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y2K

  5. The Y2K Bug was a programming error that, it was thought, had the ability to bring down most major electronics.

The extremely basic idea behind the problem was that electronic hardware and software had not been coded for either a new century or a new millenium, and when it came time to roll over from 1999 to 2000, they would not be able to recognize it as a sequentially new year, and would restart their entire process at 00 or 000.

Y2K actually failed to cause any really large problem, because it was identified as being a possibility, and it was addressed. Additionally, many believe that there would never have been a problem at all. Nonetheless, checks were put in place to ensure financial and technological apocalypse was averted.

There are differing points of view concerning the validity of the argument for preparing for Y2K, but there were some, and I stress some, minor errors when the year 2000 did eventually roll around.

These manifested themselves as things such as slot machines failing in Delaware, an alarm sounding in a nuclear power plant in Japan, ticket validating machines for buses in Australia failing, and dates reading 01/01/19100 for French weather stations and some government agencies of the United States (The computers were smart enough to count to 100 instead of restarting at 00 or exploding/short-circuiting).

But, in large part, there was no "big mess" around the world, so much as there were a few minor glitches that caused ripples in everyday life for a couple of hours or days at most.

    Hope that helped.
