Is recycling shoes a good idea or not worth it?

Absolutely worth it. Every item we keep from being buried in a landfill or burned in an incinerator is good for the earth. There are many ways to recycle the shoe. If it can still be worn then donate to a charity, if it is no longer useful as a shoe then locate a Nike recycling drop off location. They will take any shoe and recycle as much of it as they can. They use the rubber soles for playground surfaces.

recycle or re-use?

Everyone is talking about re-using them, but not about actually recycling them.

When a pair of shoes gets so old they are no longer usable (even for the homeless) I don't think we currently have a way to recycle them on a mass scale.

Yes.  If you mean the clothing collection bins or thrift stores, they will most likely be shipped to Africa or other developing areas where they will be re-used.

If it was cold , and I was barefoot and homeless, your shoes might be welcome even if they didn't match. yes it's worth it to someone.
