Question:

Is repairing this old Television worth it?

The Tv is a 18 year old NEC 30 inch floor model, my family bought it new in 1990 and since have handed it down to me. It has 3 Red, White, and Yellow RCA video/sound inputs, Dolby surround sound output and monitor input, which I thought was amazing considering its age. The colors are separating, meaning everything looks shadowed in red and green.

  1. Starting in Feb of 2009, you'll need an adapter just to watch TV on it. If you paly video games, you'll want HDMI or composite input for that. Considering it might cost $200+ to fix your color tube going out, you might as well wait and drop $400ish on a nice LCD HDTV from Vizio. A 20-26 inch LCD tv looks just as nice or better than an old 30 incher.

  2. These days a new televion will cost you less than what it will cost you to repair your old one, and thats if you can find someone who can do the repair

not to mention as of next year your old tv will need a 59-79 converter box to work...

    Get a new television

  3. The TV you are trying to fix is worth at most 50.00 and that's in pristine condition.  It would cost you a few hundred at minimum to have it fixed.  So no it would not be worth fixing.  i would donate it to Goodwill (if they'll even take it).

Use the money you would have spent on repairs towards the cost of a new TV.

  4. Its is definitely worth a call to find out. It may be just a few bucks but most likely it is not. You won't find that kind of reliability in anything for sale today.
