Question:

Is replacing an engine worth it?

I have always loved the early to mid 90's version of the Nissan Pathfinder. Now that they are getting close to 20 years old they have a tendency to have high mileage. Assuming that the body is in excellent condition and disregarding other issues like struts, springs, etc.

Is it worth putting a new engine in or buying a newer vehicle (do not need all the bells and whistles of the newer ones)?

Is it better to go with a new engine or a refurbished one?

What are things I should be careful of with these engines?

  1. I would say it would be better to just replace the engine. because you figure that if the motor blows and you try to sell it you aren't going to get much out of it.

and if you by a newer car you are going to spend way more for it than you would if you put in a new motor. also if you by a used car then you have to worry about fixing all it's problems.. where as if you were to replace the motor then you would know. "hey this thing has a new motor and if i want to drive from the east coast to the west coast then you would know that you could trust it.

so basically i would say that replacing the motor would be a better option

  2. If you love your Pathfinder it may be worth it. Before doing so have the transmission checked out. also your rear and front axles, don,t disregard the struts and springs, and  brakes. Now is the time to ask is replacing the engine worth it? a new engine will give you more security, however a "refurbished" one one can be fine it all depends who the re-builder was "get a good warranty". Yes you will need all the 20 year old parts replaced, water pump, alternator, belts, etc... this is the time to do it.

  3. A new engine will cost more than the car is worth. Get a rebuilt longblock from a reputable dealer, and put all your current accessories on the new block. By accessories, I mean your fuel injection system, alternator, power steering pump, etc, which are probably good. You'll save even more if you can do some of this work yourself.

  4. If the vehicle is in good shape otherwise and you plan to keep for a while then putting in a new or rebuilt engine makes sense. Will cost about $3,000 or so but when compared to the cost of a new vehicle this is not much. As far as using a rebuilt engine you need to ask around to various mechanics to see what their experience has been. Some rebuilds are very good and mfg will stand behind waranty
