  1. Great idea, have you considered gas??? also, spending more in the beginning can really save you more over the years.  Check out the lines and prices, then go on line and double check............warrenty also.

    good luck

  2. I am going to assume that your asking whether replacing you 15 yr old water heater with a new one is going to be an energy efficient move?

My answer to this is yes it will be.

Over time this tank has lost much of it's efficacy due to old age.

The insulation is going to be much greater in the new one. Meaning; it'll retain the heat within the tank longer than your current one. The heating elements will require less energy to heat the water. This ='s less time, less wasted electricity used to heat and maintain the temperature of the water.

Even thought the new tanks are better insulated an additional benefit would be to wrap the tank in a insulation blanket; further reducing heat loss.

Spend the $ on a reputable brand, look for the energy star on the heater. The star may also give you a slight tax break.

last option? I highly recommend you look into the tank less water heaters/instant demand systems. This will be pricey in the initial purchase however in the long term(usually within  2-4 years) the upfront cost will be offset with the long term savings)

  3. Yes, you'll save a lot of energy. First, modern appliances are more efficient (look for the Energy Star label). Secondly, water heaters build up calcium deposits internally, which affects performance.

Usually, the best move is to install a tankless water heater. Then you only heat water WHEN you need it.

  4. I don't agree with the use of tank less heaters. At least not yet. They are very expensive to purchase, expensive to install. they need softened water, and one service call for repairs will eliminate your fuel savings. There is just no pay back for the investment. Stick to a good, well insulated water heater, and go gas if you can. It will provide years of trouble free service.
