Is riding sidesaddle uncomfortable?

i was just wondering because in a thing i'm writing i don't know the ways of riding and which is the best. in my story the main characters ride in a war so which way is better?

oh and there are both girls and boys.

This is under the category of cycling, but I think you might be talking about horseback riding.
