its just a pleasure horse.

mum said i could get a horse.

i worked out i could visit it 5 times a week

(mon, tue, thurs, sat and sun)

and then ride it tuesday for like 1 hour, saturday 2-3 hours and sunday 2-3 hours.

is this enough excerise for a pleasure horse that would mainly eat grass/ and hay 2 x a day?

  1. Yeah that is enough!

  2. A stabled horse needs exercise every day. 30 mins min, remember they are in an enclosed space the other 24.5 hrs - if at grass, don't ride the horse for more than 1 hour

  3. no. you should give about 45 minutes to an hour of exersize every time you go out. without a sufficent training plan your horse can devlop some undesirable behaviors.

  4. He should be OK - but the problem with riding 6 hours at the weekend and 1 hour midweek is he will never be very fit, and the weekends will be a stretch for him.  Many many horses do cope fine with being weekend-only rides, but some find the increased strain two days a week difficult and can go lame.

If you could keep Saturday and Sunday to two hours, and add an hour on Thursday, your horse would be more able to increase his fitness and the weekends would be less of a strain for him.

  5. Yeah i would say that is around about a good amount of excercise!!!

But if you are really worried that it isnt enough excercise and you cant manage any more then maybe share it with someone that can ride it the days you cant! ! !

  6. i have a horse that i ride for pleasure,

and i only get up to see him 3-4 times a week,

and i ride him for an hour - two hours,

anymore than that and he couldn't cope

    as he isn't ridden everyday.

    he's turned out 24/7.

but keep in mind, depending on your horses breed it may

get silly if you don't ride it for a while.

    hope this helps ^-^

  7. Depends on what breed, it should be enough exercise for msot breeds, but having the hrs on one side of the wk and having only 1 hr the other side. Your horse wont grow to be as musclier as the other horses. Just make sure it gets turned out within the paddock with other horses, because horses are herd animals :)

    Have fun riding :)

  8. Yes it sounds fine especially for the feed/exercise level. Enjoy your riding!

  9. Yea that's fine as long as the horse gets turn out!

  10. Sure! My horses don't even get ridden that much some weeks. If you can't ride, still go see it as often as you can and maybe offer someone else to ride it or work with it?

    Good luck, and congrats!

  11. it's OK but he will never be very fit and i think you should ride him longer in the week so he wont be strained on the weekends and if you don't ride him more on the week day than he could go lame

  12. I think most of the time it would be fine, but when the spring grass comes your horse would need more exercise or he'll become bad mannered and reluctant to work from eating too much good feed.

Summer, winter, autumn that would be fine. Maybe on your visit days in spring you could lunge him for a good 10 minutes - then he can get some speedy exercise in without taking up too much or your time.

Very best of luck. Happy horse hunting:)

  13. 2-3 hours of riding is kind of much for a pleasure horse dont you think, i think 2 hours tops, and your horse is going to get FAT if it is turned out the whole time and doesnt get much exercise, My horse is ridden every day and isnt grazing 24/7 and is still on the heavy side.  having a fat horse has some serious health risks.  I would at least ride him every day you come out, even for half an hour.

    hope this helps!

  14. Yes I would say that was enough exercise. Your horse will never be very very fit but if it is just a pleasure horse and you arent going to be doing any competitions then thats fine!

Make sure there is someone to help you out to look after your horse on the days that you dont go up (weds and fri).

Turn-out would be good too so that your horse can get a little more exercise than if it was just stuck in a stable : )

good luck with your new horsie!!!

  15. that would be fine for exercise, although its different when a horse is stabled

  16. it will be fine.
