Is rough idling normal?

I have a used Ford Focus that I got a few months back. Not having the time to work on it or fool with it, it sat in the driveway since about March of this year. The person I had bought it from had also not ran it for several months before selling it. So it pretty much wasn't used for the better part of a year. After making many necessary repairs to the car, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to be running very smoothly. It started out very loud from the inside of the car, but later quieted down a bit after a few drives today. But the idling is still pretty rough. Sounds and feels like it is trying not to quit, with some rather loud clanking here and there. I was just wondering if this sort of thing is normal or to be expected when after a car has not run for a while, or if it is likely some sort of mechanical problem. Because I think I remember this sort of thing happening with a car once before.
