Rowing exercises all major muscle groups (86% of all muscles), and is an "intense calorie-burning exercise". It offers massive improvements in cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength.

It is also a low-impact sport (Unlike running e.t.c) and as movement occurs "only in defined ranges" "twist and sprain injuries are rare."

Fine balance needs to be developed to row well (as the boats are so slim) and although it doesn't really build muscle bulk in itself, most rowers incorporate weights training into their practices.

It is also good for you in other, less obvious, ways. Most rowing clubs have very friendly and sociable atmospheres and rowing definitely improves self-confidence.

On the other hand, "the repetitive rowing action can put strain on knee joints, the spine and the tendons of the forearm" and these effects are amplified if "one rows with poor technique".

In my experience, back injury is the most common ailment in rowing (having been the only member of my high school rowing team to not have any back issues this season). However, back injuries CAN be avoided if stretches are carried out after each rowing session, and good core stability is maintained.
