  1. rugby does incorporate a lot of strategy but the thing with rugby is that there's a strategy or game plan each team follows but at the same time on the field each player has to improvise because there is hardly any time to pause and call plays like in american football. When my team played we worked on overall team strategies on attack and defense but at the same time smaller groups of players would make their own set plays for specific attacks or defense tactics. I believe it is being able to improvise and adapt to the game which makes rugby a wonderful sport to play and watch.

  2. Yes.

If youre really into youre rugby then you will realise that most points are scored because of the kicking game and not solely because of sheer strength.

  3. In a word: yes.

    In 2 words: Yes.  Lots.

  4. even more so.  the whole point is to overload your offense and create holes in their defense by making them overcommit.  the bottom line is, if you have more open men than they have defenders ready, then there is no reason that you should not score.  if you can make two defenders commit to you, then there;s a hole someplace else.  the trick is finding it and capitalizing on it.  its the same in both sports, but in rugby, its more of a work in progress instead a shocking, crashing play.  in rugby its more a tease to one side and then a quick switch or kick in the other direction.  in football its more of a sneaky play- a plan that someone didnt think of before...and soemthing you get 4 chances to complete.

of course ruggers do it all on their feet during play while football players get to receive radio plays from coaches and then discuss it in huddles.  the piles of people on the gorund- rucks and mauls- have a purpose- they create phases in the game that attempt to draw in the defense and reset your offense

one of the most interesting things to watch during the world cup is to see how the differnt styles of play of teams has been used as stragegy against other teams and seeing the compensation in their strategies.

  5. you have 80mn to out smart your opposition in all facits of a rugby game.Where you are weak in one area who can combat in another.Set pieces like a line out,you can shortend it or speed it up by quick throw ins, if your opposition is towering over you.Playing a game at a fast pace can run your opposition off the park. if they are kilos heavier than your side.Tactical kicking and slick back moves are a bonus as they say "the ball always beat the man".You dnt necessary have to have the best team but if you have the best stratergy you can foot it with the big boys.GO ALLBLACKS!!!!!!!!!

  6. Very much so... but the strategy is altered and executed a lot faster.  You do not have the time to call in play by play so once the game starts, the players are far more responsible for making adjustments to tactics and strategy.

You probably wont notice a lot of the strategy teams are employing though since some are very subtle.  Trying to play to one side of the field, kicking behind a winger thats slow to turn, keeping kicks inbounds and trying to force opposition to kick it out, keeping the ball close to the forwards to grind the other team down are all common ones but there are a ton more that go unnoticed to most spectators.

Tons of strategy, but nowhere near the amount of time to employ it as American Football.
