Is rugby the number 1 sport in Australia?

I was just wondering because I know they have that silly Aussie rules football and it is popular there but I always thought rugby was their nr.1 sport?

I disagree that league is bigger than union in Australia...

Our #1 sports are without doubt AFL and cricket.

Union would be our third most popular sport, then league and soccer.

Rugby (usually referred to as Rugby Union in Australia) is probably the fourth or fifth biggest sport in Australia. Behind Australian Rules, Rugby League and Cricket - Rugby is roughly the same level of popularity as Football (sometimes referred to as "Soccer.")

Basically Rugby and Rugby League is big in New South Wales, ACT and Queensland and Australian Rules in Victoria, SA, WA, NT and Tasmania. Cricket is popular everywhere as is Football.

However, both Rugby and Football are getting more popular. There is even a Super 14 Rugby team based in Perth WA now, which is traditionally a strong Australian Rules market.

i think that there are a lot of claims about many sports that they are the most popular sports in Australia.

The most valid ones states that cricket is actually Australia's number one sport, being played at a very high standard in every state.

However Rugby League is placed as Being the premier Winter Sport followed by Rugby Union by Queensland and New South Wales.

that was confusing.

but i do believe that AFL (Aussie footy) is more popular sport nationally on average in our country.
