Is running 5kms on a cross trainer the same as 5kms on the treadmill?

I workout on a cross trainer cos it is low impact for my knee joints. Wondering if it is comparable to running the same distance on the treadmill.

I have been doing about 4kms in 10mins at about 72 reps per min. Is this about the same for running?

  1. No it's not the same. It's like cycling too. Cycling 1 mile is not the same as running 1 mile. I'm not sure how to work it out you'd have to google it or something :)

  2. Not the same.. World record in the 5k is 12:37..

  3. No it wouldn't be comparable because more effort is required in actual running. You need to push your foot of the ground with each step and lift your leg.

I found that I could run 20 minutes on a treadmill at a fairly decent pace, yet when I ran outside, I was lucky to last 10 minutes.

  4. well normally about 10 minutes will get you approx 2kms
