  1. of course it helps your calves. thats one of the muscles it works the most because like the first guy said it works all of your muscles. my sister is one of the best girl runners in our high school and she can contract her calf muscles into a rounded footbal shape i think it was. she was bragging about them and showing them off during first semester last year. and then when i did track my calfs got rock hard! and don't worry if they still shake a little when you hit them or when you jump or other stuff like that. both your upper and lower leg muscles will probably still shake if you are able to run 10 miles in 8 miutes.

  2. If you think your calves are too slender running will not help.

The best exercise to build additional mass is calf raises. The first link below will help you understand how to do them.

If you don't have access to a gym or don't like weights you might prefer a ballet exercise called, "Releves". I am linking to video that will show you how to do them.

  3. It depends on what you mean by improve. Distance running will definitely define and slim your legs, if that is what you're asking. Otherwise, specific leg workouts like calf-raises, squats and the like will also define your legs, but will ultimately increase their mass for a more 'buff' look.

  4. running is good for about anything.  But go really soft with it - you can beat up the cartilage in your knees.  Drinks plenty of water.

  5. Try dancing. Ballet especially. Jump roping is also a great calf work out. Anything that keeps you on your toes really.

  6. running improves every muscle/plus your lungs

  7. The type of training you choose will depend on your goals.  Are you trying to tone and tighten, or are you looking to increase muscle mass?  Distance running is great for building endurance and overall strength, but what you'll end up with is very strong muscles that no one will really see.  What I mean by that is your muscles will be lean, efficient, and toned, but they're not going to be massive.  If you're looking solely to increase size and definition, then weight training is the better choice.

Running provides a number of benefits that weight training does not, however.  Distance running, in particular, is great for your cardiovasular fitness and for maintaining a healthy weight.  Eliminating just a few pounds of extra weight can make a big difference in muscle definition by shrinking the layers of subcutaneous fat beneath the skin that hide the muscles.  Bottom line...running will do great things for your entire body, not just your calves.

    Good Luck!
