Is running important for boxing?

I have been going to boxing gym 5 days a week for the past 2 weeks. I have seen a lot of improvement and I have picked up a lot of things quickly. My trainer said I am ready to spar. I am a full-time student in engineering and work everyday it is hard for me to find time to run.

Whenever I go to the boxing gym I put on a sweat suit and I sweat a lot. I work out my chest, back, abs, shoulders, and arms 3 times a week. Would running really help that much?

If it does then how much and how often should i be running?

Should I be doing a mile a day or run for a half hour?

Should I do sprints too?

Thank you

  1. if you can't run you can't fight. there is nothing that can replace roadwork. you should have long run at least twice a week with one long run of at least three miles (should take no more than 30 min) and also run lots of sprints at least one day but sprinting is better for two to three days. Swimming is another great thing to do if you have access to a pool. Swimming is great to mix in with your running to switch off between running and swimming.
