  1. no not really becuase your not going anywhere

  2. ....

Running in place is not quite the same as running.

Running in place involves an up and down motion.  Running is certainly up and down; but it's really more like up, forward, and down.

If you can maintain the same higher heartbeat you have when you run (which frankly is very hard to do), you will get the same cardiovascular benefits - your heart and breathing related muscles and vessels will strengthen.

But running in place causes you to exert fewer muscles in the process - consequently fewer muscles are activated, fewer are strengthened.

Plus you can't get quite the leg impact from running in place that you can get from regular running.

Cardio, yes, but overall leg muscle strength, no.

    Regards,

    Phil

  3. no. when you run you are pushing forward with your legs. when you run in place, you are mearly picking up one leg thain the other.

  4. It isn't exactly the same as you aren't pushing with your legs to actually move, but it will give you somewhat similar benefits and cardiovascular improvement.

  5. no it will not give you the same workout or give you as much strength in your legs

  6. Ditto Tom--different muscles, same cardio benefits.  Also, in place is probably safer on joints, etc. since it can be done lower impact on flat carpet, rather than concrete or uneven grass.

  7. not really
