    but for most people cross country skiing isnt viable


  2. I think swimming is the best:

    - no real stress on any joints

    - Most strokes use a large variety of muscles

    I'm pretty sure there will be plenty other reasons too, plus there are lots of facilities to swim.

  3. It is and isnt. Firstly it is a good cardio vascular workout because your getting the heart pumping, and aslong as you keep it up for a half hour of continous exercise, 3 times a week, you should see improvements.  However running also has the drawback that if done alot, it can damage the knee and ankle joints ( when you take each stride and land on your foot it is the equivalent of 10 times your weight on your joints, i.e you way 180 pounds, your putting a force of 1800 pounds on your joints) thats why running is not always best, personally I prefer to cycle, alot easier on the joints.  But remember you will only actually see a difference in your fitness if you exert yourself, you know your doing this when you cant speak and exercise at the same time, i.e your out of breath, and do this 3 times a week, half hour each session, you should see improvements within 6 weeks.
