  1. Uh, Mavericks is big wave surfing. I think you want to stay clear of that. But SF has Ocean Beach (watch the rip current), Pacifica has Linda Mar, Montara has a couple of spots. Santa Cruz has some good surf (mellow and fun). Capitola too. So bring your board and a wet suit. You will need it. Maybe booties and a hood too.

  2. Neither San Francisco nor Monterey are good for surfing.  But there are many good spots in between, just a few miles from either one.  There's a place near Pacifica, maybe 10 mi. down the coast from San Francisco that is supposed to be world-class.  I forget the name (sorry!) but someone will know.  And a few miles north of Monterey is Santa Cruz, a famous surfer's paradise.

I looked it up.  Just south of San Francisco is 'Maverick'.

I've seen films of this place and it looks really great!  (I don't surf myself)

Here is the bigger map with all the spots south of S.F.

  3. Mavericks is not a place you would go bodyboarding or boogieboarding. It's off shore and best known for its big wave surfing competition. You didn't say where you're from but if you're used to warm water then you'd be better off leaving the boards at home. If you have a wetsuit then it could be fun to bring them. It's not really much fun to bodyboard in San Francisco but there are a few spots further south (Pacifica, Montara) that you could easily reach and spend a few hours at when based in San Francisco. Santa Cruz and Capitola, about an hour north of Monterey have some fun beaches. They're cold too but a little warmer than the exposed beaches near San Francisco.
