  1. No, you need a reverse osmosis water filter. They have two to four stages including the membranes. Once installed they do not need anything for up to 2 years and replacing the membrane every four or five. They filter out all the nasty stuff we don't need.  Lowe's and Home Depot or some appliance stores usually sell them. You can get one on line as well, however it may be more convenient to get it local in case you need advice.

    I've had one for 8 years now and can't imagine being without. Once you get used to not drinking all the chemicals in your water, it's impossible to go back.


  2. No it isn't. You need a carbon filter that will actually remove the two items you listed. If you go to a store like Home Depot or Lowe's and check out the water filters, they have charts comparing one to another and listing the things each removes. Obviously, the better the filter works the more expensive it is. I purchased  a two stage filter for less than $100 from Lowe's and you can really tell the difference.
