  1. Yes and everything in between.  It obviously depends on the size of the grains of sand that made up the stone.  You can find places where the heavier coarser grains are on the bottom, having fallen more quickly out of flowing water then as the water slowed down, finer and finer grains were deposited.  In fact, this is one way folded geologic structures are identified - if you find the layers going up and down instead of horizontally or if the coarse stuff is on top and gets finer going down (without discontinuities of different deposits) then almost certainly it was deposited the other way and turned over after being rock.


  2. Typically it is fine grained.
