  1. Yes!  There are some very good young players in tournament Scrabble, even younger than that.

Not only does it help with vocabulary and spelling, but math skills as well, because of scoring.

If your kid enjoys playing, check into National Scrabble Association sanctioned clubs in you area.  Not only will it help him be a better player, but to socialize with people of different backgrounds and ages.

  2. uh-huh, unless your child struggles with words. I used to love Scrabble...

  3. Oh he will have a ball make sure you get the scrabble dictionary also.It will teach him spelling and new words.Have fun.

  4. He's definitely old enough to play it, but he might not be old enough to develop a serious strategy yet.  I think it's a great game for kids though; it keeps their minds working.

  5. Probably not unless the young man shows an aptitude for word games and doesn't mind losing to adults who have better vocabularies. Check out the games at www.boardgamegeek.com to find something the whole family can enjoy!

  6. Yes! Scrabble is a great family game, its educational and fun. Encourage your son when you start and perhaps help him, so that he doesn't feel out classed.

  7. Very good at learning how to spell and learning new words when played with older people.  My grandson started playing scrabble at 8.

  8. i loved to play scrabble when i was that age.

  9. absolutely! I got my daughter (then about the same age) to play (we didn't score). I let her use the dictionary to 'help' her. BUT the biggest advantage wasn't winning or losing but building her vocabulary and 'thinking' of words outside of the 3-4 letter variety!

PS - my favorite word is jonquil

  10. Scrabble is wonderful for any age group.  I am a director for the National Scrabble Association and in most tournaments there are four divisions--A are the elite of the Scrabble world and Division D is fondly referred to as The Little Old Lady Division!  There is a place for everybody to play in the Scrabble world.  Scrabble keeps the dendrites connected thereby warding off Alzheimers!

  11. Yes.

And it is perfect for teaching your son...
