I'm of the hanafi fiqh (although I still need to do some research into it to decide whether I want to stick with it)

Is seafood haram? If so, which seafood, and under which madhab?

Thanks

  1. well.... i don't know anything about this but when you talk about sea food being haram i guess it can be as haram as pork.... especially if you're talking about mussels, oysters etc which it is known they puriy dirty water thus they eat dirt....

so if pork is haram because it is dirty so are oysters and mussels.

and mushrooms, mushrooms are moss, they grow where it is humid and are in themselves spores.

and maybe shark too because it eats humans too sometimes,

dolphins and whales are mamals so they are protected

    PLEASE SHARKS ARE NOT MAMMALS

  2. things from the sea are  halal as are women scooped off the street.

It may, superficially, appear distasteful to copulate with a woman who is not a man's legal wife, but once Shariat makes something lawful, we have to accept it as lawful, whether it appeals to our taste, or not; and whether we know its underlying wisdom or not. It is necessary for a Muslim to be acquainted with the laws of Shariat, but it is not necessary for him to delve into each law in order to find the underlying wisdom of these laws because knowledge of the wisdom of some of the laws may be beyond his puny comprehension. Allah Ta'ala has said in the Holy Quran:“Wa maa ooteetum min al-ilm illaa qaleelan” which means, more or less, that, "You have been given a very small portion of knowledge”. Hence, if a person fails to comprehend the underlying wisdom of any law of Shariat, he cannot regard it as a fault of Shariat (Allah forbid), on the contrary, it is the fault of his own perception and lack of understanding, because no law of Shariat is contradictory to wisdom.

Nevertheless, the wisdom underlying the permission granted by Shariat to copulate with a slave woman is as follows: The LEGAL possession that a Muslim receives over a slave woman from the “Ameerul-Mu'mineen”(the Islamic Head of State) gives him legal credence to have coition with the slave woman in his possession, just as the marriage ceremony gives him legal credence to have coition with his wife. In other words, this LEGAL POSSESSION is, in effect, a SUBSTITUTE of the MARRIAGE CEREMONY. A free woman cannot be 'possessed', bought or sold like other possessions; therefore Shariat instituted a 'marriage ceremony' in which affirmation and consent takes place, which gives a man the right to copulate with her. On the other hand, a slave girl can be possessed and even bought and sold, thus, this right of possession, substituting as a marriage ceremony, entitles the owner to copulate with her. A similar example can be found in the slaughtering of animals; that after a formal slaughtering process, in which the words,“Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” are recited, goats, cows, etc.; become “Halaal” and lawful for consumption, whereas fish becomes “Halaal” merely through 'possession' which substitutes for the slaughtering.

In other words, just as legal possession of a fish that has been fished out of the water, makes it Halaal for human consumption without the initiation of a formal slaughtering process; similarly legal possession of a slave woman made her Halaal for the purpose of coition with her owner without the initiation of a formal marriage ceremony.

In short, permission to have intercourse with a slave woman was not something barbaric or uncivilised; on the contrary, it was almost as good as a marriage ceremony.

  3. no shark is not.I'm sure about that

    http://www.soundvision.com/Info/halalhea...

  4. To make it simple, in general Islam does not allow you to eat any animals that eats other animals like lions or tigers,

shark is Haram because of the aspect that it eats other animals while some say that fish eat fish and some other consider shark not as a fish because it's a mammal, so the whole thing isn't quite set on something specified

  5. I very much doubt if anyone understands you!!!

  6. I'll give you another angle.

Sharks are hunted for their fins only, for the shark-fin soup. So the rest of the animal goes to waste and because of this special soup sharks are in danger of extinction. If you ask me, when there are zillion types of soup to fill your stomach with, it should be a sin to choose shark fin soup and help the extinction of the species.

    Wasting nimet is a sin.

Now think about the thousands of animals slaughtered in Saudi Arabia during hac, with the promise of sending them to the needy people, but just because it is very expensive to do so, are buried in the sand. So many poor people that don't eat meat and thousands of animals whose meat go to waste.

If this isn't sin, I don't what is.

  7. In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

In the Hanafi madhab, all fish are Halal. Sharks are defined as "...any of several fast-swimming, generally large fish...". (MSN Encarta; http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_7615...

Since sharks are fish and all fish are Halal, sharks are also Halal. Allama Damiri (RA) has also classified sharks as fish in his work, Hayatul Hayawan.

    Verily, Allah knows best.

n the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

The answer given by Shaykh Sikander is correct indeed and something that is agreed upon by all four Sunni Schools of Islamic law. All the four major Sunni Madhabs are in agreement that consuming all types of fish is without doubt Halal, due to the explicit mention of this in the Quran and Sunnah.

The permissibility of eating all types of fish without the need of carrying out the Islamic method of slaughter is a special dispensation given to us by Allah Most High, the All-Wise and All-Knowing. Fish has been exempted from the general ruling of the impermissibility of eating dead animals, and it can be consumed even if it was a man-eater.

    Allah Most High says:

Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game (fishing) and its use for food, for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel (Surah al-Maida, V: 96)

This verse, according to the understanding of the Hanafi Mujtahids, refers to fish only, and not other animals.

Moreover, Sayyiduna Abd Allah ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him eternal peace) said: Two types of dead meat and two types of blood have been made lawful for our consumption: The two dead meats are: fish and locust, and the two types of blood are: liver and spleen. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Musnad Ahmad, 2/97 and Sunan Ibn Majah, no: 3314)

Thus, there is complete consensus with regards to the permissibility of eating fishes of all kind, including sharks and whales, due to the above-mentioned and many other evidences found in the Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and his blessed Companions (Allah be pleased with them all) have been reported in many narrations to have consumed fish. In fact, there is a renowned Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and elsewhere that alludes to the permissibility of eating large fishes such as the shark and whale.

Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abd Allah (Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) sent troops to the sea-coast and appointed Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (Allah be pleased with him) as their commander, and they were 300 (men). We set out, and we had covered some distance on the way, when our journey-food and provision ran short. So Abu Ubayda ordered that all the food present with the troops be collected, and it was collected. Our journey-food was dates, and Abu Ubayda kept on giving us our daily share from it little by little until it decreased to such an extent that we did not receive except a date each. I asked (Jabir): How did you survive on one date? He said: We came to know its value when even that finished. Jabir added: Then we reached the sea (coast) where we found a fish like a small mountain. The people (i.e. troops) ate from it for 18 nights (i.e. days). Then Abu Ubayda ordered that two of its ribs be fixed on the ground (in the form of an arch) and that a she-camel be ridden and passed under them. So it passed under them without touching them. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 4102, Kitab al-Maghazi)

In another version of this narration, Sayyiduna Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) says:

We set out in the army of al-Khabt and Abu Ubayda (Allah be pleased with him) was the commander of the troops. We were struck with severe hunger and the sea threw out a dead fish the like of which we had never seen, and it was called al-Anbar. We ate of it for half a month. Abu Ubayda took (and fixed) one of its bones and a rider passed underneath it (without touching it). Abu Ubayda said (to us): Eat (of that fish). When we arrived at Madina, we informed the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) about what had happened, and he said: Eat, for it is food Allah has brought out for you, and feed us if you have some of it. So some of them gave him (of that fish) and he ate it. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 4104)

The above narration clearly shows that the Anbar fish which the sea had thrown out for the consumption of the Companions (Allah be pleased with them all) was a huge and gigantic fish. Sayyiduna Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) resembled it to a small mountain and Sayyiduna Abu Ubayda (Allah be pleased with him) made an arch with its ribs and a camel-rider passed under it without his head touching the ribs. In another narration, it is mentioned that Abu Ubayda (Allah be pleased with him) had chosen the tallest man out of them to ride the camel, in order to show the enormity of the fish. Thus, it can be said (and Allah knows best) that this fish may be some kind of a whale or shark.

In conclusion, all the Fuqaha of the four Sunni Schools of Islamic law are in agreement that all types of fish are Halal for consumption. This also includes sharks, for they are also considered to be from the fish family.

  8. Sharks and Dolphins do not have scales. You know Ithna Ashariya don't eat that.

"Shaykh Hurr al-`Amili, for example, quotes ahadith which indicate that Imam Ali (a.s.) used to go around the fish market of Kufa and announce that "do not eat or sell the fish that does not have scales". (Wasailu 'sh-s**+`ah, vol. 16, 329-330) Other statements from the fifth and sixth s**+`a Imams clearly forbid the eating of a fish which does not have scales. (Ibid) On the issue of shrimps and prawns, there are quite a few ahadith in Wasa'ilu 'sh-s**+`a, vol. 16 pp. 337 to 339."

  9. to sum up for you, shia believe fish without scales and seafood like lobster are haram, whereas for sunnis these things are not haram.  As for shark, again for sunnis it is halal and for shias either makrooh or haram.  the permissibility for eating seafood in general is found in the Quran “Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game (fishing) and its use for food, for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel…” (Surah al-Ma’ida, V: 96)  and regarding larger fish we read the following : Sayyiduna Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) says:

“We set out in the army of al-Khabt and Abu Ubayda (Allah be pleased with him) was the commander of the troops. We were struck with severe hunger and the sea threw out a dead fish the like of which we had never seen, and it was called al-Anbar. We ate of it for half a month. Abu Ubayda took (and fixed) one of its bones and a rider passed underneath it (without touching it). Abu Ubayda said (to us): “Eat (of that fish).” When we arrived at Madina, we informed the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) about what had happened, and he said: “Eat, for it is food Allah has brought out for you, and feed us if you have some of it.” So some of them gave him (of that fish) and he ate it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 4104) The above narration clearly shows that the Anbar fish which the sea had thrown out for the consumption of the Companions (Allah be pleased with them all) was a huge and gigantic fish.

  10. Seafood in Islam:-

The Qur'an states that everything from the sea is halal, including carnivores such as sharks. Despite most carnivorous animals being haram, marine predators seem to be the exception to this rule.

Sources stating that prawns, crabs and other crustaceans are haram based on other verses of the Qur'an which mentions that seawater is bitter. This is not true as the verse quoted below states that all food from the sea is halal.

The Holy Qur'an, 35:12 - The two seas are not the same; one is fresh and delicious, while the other is salty and undrinkable. From each of them you eat tender meat, and extract jewelry to wear. And you see the ships sailing through them, seeking His provisions, that you may be appreciative.

  11. According to Abu Hanifa; all sea food is Halal, as he wrote in his book "The Grand Fiqh".

@Dear brothers above; all kinds of fish; even the tiny ones; are predators, and eat the human flesh of the drowned persons.

  12. No shark is not haram but it is mukr'ooh which means it is neither good nor bad this aplies to most  sea creatures.

  13. [5:96] All fish of the sea are made lawful for you to eat. During pilgrimage, this may provide for you during your journey. You shall not hunt throughout the pilgrimage. You shall reverence GOD, before whom you will be summoned

  14. sea food isn't haram its all halal

  15. Fish without scale, are haram.

  16. no it's not haraam.

the prophet (saw) said the sea water is tahoor(can be used for wadoo) and the animals (creatures) living in it are halal.

so no sea food is haraam.

btw someone said that shark doesn't have scales and so it's haram. there's nothing like that. i exactly don't remember which battle it was but during that battle the mujahidoon ate a shark. i'll let you know which battle it was.
