Question:

Is she too young for a relaxer (perm)?

My daughter is turning 11 in January. She has very thick hair. It is healthy but very thick! For 6 years I have been doing the press and curl thing but this is beginning to be a hassle. She loses a lot of hair in the summer because she swims so I am constantly washing, drying and applying that heat to it. PLUS IT TAKES ABOUT 3 HOURS to do : ( Her hair is past her shoulder by about 2 inches so it is considered long.

So back to my question. Is she too young for a relaxer? People have suggested I run a very mild relaxer through it every 4 months or so. The only brand they recommended was Just for Me which I hear sucks! Any experts I will value your opinion and take your advice to heart.

  1. It depends on if she will be able to take care of it. From the way it sounds like, it sounds like she doesn't take care of it, YOU do. & you can be there 24/7 with her. She is going to have to learn how to keep her hair wrapped every night and wear a scarf. So it doesn't sound like she is ready for the responsibility. And her hair is already falling out so i think you should just braid it until she gets a little older and gets more responsible.

  2. Since her hair is so thick, you might want to use Dark & Lovely. Usually 11 years old is too young, but since her hair is so thick and long, I don't think that it would be too young.

  3. Nope not too young, why not try it out :)

  4. nobody is too young for that.

it'd be a lot of help.

  5. well i've been getting relaxers since i was nine. soo i really dont think she is too young. but i go get mine done perfessionaly so i cost alot but hey its worth it and i got back every 2 weeks to get a deep conditioning[[but thats only cause my hair gets dry quick]] but i got back every 2-4 months to get another relaxer. i know its expensive but my hair has to be on point or i look very wild. i hope i helped.

  6. It shouldn't be to young. One of the girls I work with has a 5 yr old that got a perm. It all depends on the type of hair. The best thing you can do is actually ask a professional that normal works with younger children.

  7. My hair used to be like that when I was little and my mom made the mistake of giving me a relaxer. Trust me you'll both regret it, it will all eventually fall out. Um in the summers invest in a swimming cap or put conditioner in her hair before she goes in a pool which I do all the time, it will feel less dried out and stiff. Maybe invest in a really good straightener beacuse relaxers are just not the way to go especially if she has thick long hair like you're describing.

  8. No your daughter is not too young for a relaxer.  Just For Me worked pretty good for me and I used it up until I started going to college.  Just For Me is a relaxer for children so I think you should give it a try because it is not as strong as others.  Relaxers have very harsh chemicals in them and since she swims alot in the summer you will have to make sure to take extremely good care of her hair.   It seems like you do alot to her hair because the chemicals from the relaxer, mixed with the chlorine from the swimming pool, combined with washing and applying a lot of heat to her hair will be very hard on her hair.  It can be done though!! I'm sure you know that constantly washing your daughters hair is drying it out.  If you decide to relax her hair make sure to moisturize it all the time and condition it once a month (twice in the summer), and keep the ends trimmed.

  9. she is ONLY ten!! no!! she should be enjoying her life not wasting time, effort, or risking her hair's "healthy-ness" to perming her hair!

my friend has VERY thick hair, she is in 10th grade, but she only straightens it.

don't take your child's natural hair or childhood away from her. i think she can wait a couple years...
