Is shyness an insecurity or a trait?

I'm pretty sure that you can be very secure with yourself and still be shy. But a lot of people are telling me it's a flaw and insecurity....what do you think?

I think it's more like an emotion expressed due to something. A more quiet nature is a trait I think, and is different from shyness. I guess shyness could also be a trait, but I'm not sure. Like, some people may have a natural trait that is more sensitive or scared which makes them more shy.

Well, let's see.. I'm insecure and people often think of me as shy. Which I really don't think I am but they still think so.
