I'm still a beginner and have not yet cantered but my trainer has been having me do the sitting trot lately sometimes with and without stirrups.

  1. like my instructor says "if you can't sit the trot, you can't sit the canter"

  2. Yes, sitting trot will help your balance and getting use to sitting deep in the saddle without going against your horses motion of movement. Also when you canter for the first time you will sit the trot, sit deep, half halt and squeeze and then your horse should canter.

    Good luck

  3. The sitting trot is to help with your seat development. It strengthens your muscles and teaches you balance. Posting trot without stirrups is even better! But yes, it will help you in cantering because it will help you develop a more secure seat.

  4. the sitting trot and no stirrup work will be VERY helpful in learning to canter because you would have already learned to sit deep into the saddle and gotten used to ONLY sitting..

But, its also something that's just good to do..  no stirrup work will help with your balance and ability to deal with problems in different situations.. it also strengthens your leg which means it makes riding  a little easier and thats always good!!

  5. The depth of your seat in the saddle is the main control of a horse's speed.  Before you canter, you need to develop the strength and balance to sit deep at the trot.  If that step in your instruction is skipped, you will not have control over your horse's speed without hauling on the bit....which doesn't work in the long run.

  6. The sitting trot is very important to be able to do well to develop into a better rider. doing the sitting trot with and without stirrups will build your leg muscles up so they will be strong. that will help when you start cantering you will be less bouncy and be able to keep your butt in the saddle and not slam on your horses back. Keep up the sitting and you'll canter soon im sure. This will lend a huge hand in you becoming a better rider.

  7. Any exercise prepares you for something else.  It does, however give you an opportunity to get in tune with your horse and his gaits.  It helps builds the muscles that you are going to need to ride those gaits.  Further, when you begin posting without stirrups, it will get you used to letting the horse post you instead of you doing it all yourself...this in turn, also gets your timing honed better.

  8. In order to do a proper sitting trot you have to loosen and move at the hips. In order to do a proper sitting canter you have to loosen and soften at the hips.

So yes this will help you develop looser hips as well as better balance, a better seat and better position.
