Is skype a good alternative to having a land line??

I am not sure about skype, but most VOIP type companies do have 911 service and will work with high speed modem, DSL and dial up. Many will also work without a computer as long as an adapter is used.  Unlike a regular land line, there are no connection fees, taxes or cancellation fees.

Another great advantage with VOIP is it saves on your cell phone minutes. How many times during the week have people called you on your cell phone and you told them to call you after 9 pm.

Some VOIP companies have free international calls if you and the person you are talking too are signed up with the same company.

You don't need a phone jack for VOIP to work. It works through your computer or you can get modem type adapter that will allow you to use a regular cordless phone. Anyway the following are some VOIP companies to take a look at:

The above are all good companies and all can save you money and have different features.
