  1. Yes, sling shot and long tail are the same cast on.  You purl the row after the cast on if you so choose for straight stockinette stitch, but if you are making a scarf of any shape that you don't want to curl you need to have the first and last inch's worth of stitches stay in garter stitch.  If you don't mind the one row that looks out of pattern you can knit the first row after the cast on, but if you are working by numbers of rows, the cast on row is not counted as a row worked.

  2. slingshot and long tail is the same thing. you would start purling the next row.

  3. Easiest way to cast on is the way you are doing it with long tail. Just count the number of stitches you are putting on the needle.

If you want a narrow scarf, do 25 stitches, wider do 50, if you want to do fewer rows and make it as wide as you like

cast on 150 and knit 10 rows, knit about 50 stitches, bind off 15, and knit the rest of that row. Now knit to where the bind off is and crochet chain on 15 stitches and knit the remainder of the row. Knit all the way across knitting in the 15 stitches in the crochet chain and finishing out that row. Now knit about 8 to 10 more rows.

You have made an ascot type scarf. The one tail will run through the buttonhole slot and stay nicely.

count every stitch in every row til you get easy with the knitting, then you can count every so often like every 5 rows. Unless you are doing some pattern like ocean waves. Quite lovely, but not so easy to do.
