Question:

Is smoking still allowed in Paris restaurants and cafes?

I was in Paris 7 years ago and remember being able to smoke in most public places and even inside the airport without having to goto designated areas.

I'm heading to Paris again in 2 months and was wondering if it is still a smoker-friendly city.

  1. Under France's anti-tobacco legislation, smokers who light up in cafes face fines of between 68 euros (100 dollars) and 450 euros while business owners can incur penalties of up to 750 euros for violations.

  2. Mum & Dad were in Paris in January, I was really shocked to learn there are no smoking policies there even outside! I thought outdoor cafes were where you would go to smoke.

  3. Sadly, Fascism has taken hold even in France and the liberty of smoking inside any public space has been banned since January 1.

  4. France is not half the country it used to be and smoking in bars and restaurants isn't allowed anymore...

You can still smoke if your table is on the pavement though...
