Is snails a appetizer in France or is it a Maine course?

It can be either, once you get the garlic butter and the bread involved it can be very filling, sometimes they serve it in a puff pastry too, I haven't seen much of that, if at all in the USA.  I get it as a main course all the time and I love it.

Snails are usually an entrée, or starter, when they are served alone, but there are main courses which have snails in the mix (pie, cagouillade, with mushrooms, and other such courses).

Snails would be served as an appetizer.  They are not big enough to make a meal, you would need over 50 of them to make them filling.  Most serve them in a garlic butter, delicious!

I'm French and I never see snails served as an appetizer or a main course !

Snails are for the first course.

It is more often served as an appetizer in France, than in Maine.  Lobster, on the other hand, is a very typical main course served in Maine.

stand alone, it's an appetizer. I guess you could cook it in something and use it as a main though.
