I'm trying to figure out why one should remove an acid first before washing with sodium bisulfite in an Sn1 reaction.

  1. Bisulfite ion, HSO3(-), is the conjugate base of sulfurous acid, H2SO3, which has pKa1 of 1.8. So, bisulfite could wash away carboxylic acids along with any other adduct that it can form. Best to remove acids with bicarb first.
