    It is one of those things which may or may not be of animal origin.

    It is made by combining Lactic Acid with Stearic Acid and then reacting the result with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to make the sodium or calcium salt. It is used as an emulsifier in processed foods.

    To be sure if it is plant based or not - you would have to write to the company itself that has it listed on its product.
