  1. actually, not particularly.

    rain forests typically get enough rain that most of the minerals get leached out of the soil.

    the decaying material from what's died recently is the best part of the growing medium.

    the good news is that there's lots of water and sunlight, allowing plants to take advantage of whatever nutrients are available.

    at least, that's what i've been lead to believe.


  2. It is wonderful for growing crops.  That is why it is done there so much, but it is what is destroying the ecosystem/rainforests there.  They farmers cut down huge amounts of rainforests to get these lands.

    ...the main soils are Ferralsols, which are strongly predominant. Ferralsols are extremely weathered soils Ferralsols are poor chemically, with a low ion exchange capacity, and nutrient reserves that are easily depleted by agricultural practices.
