Question:

Is solid pine stronger than particle board when it comes to a bed frame?

I am buying a new bed, and found a nicely-priced solid pine unfinished bed as well as a bed made of particle board and wood veneer and I'm wondering which, if either, will have stronger characteristics than the other. I'm only asking because I know pine is a "soft wood" and am unsure of its strength (especially for a queen sized bed and my size -- I'm 6'3" and weigh 280 lbs). Also, if i shouldn't even be looking at these beds and should be looking at other materials, let me know. Thanks!

  1. solid pine will be stronger by far

  2. Buy the pine. It's not a strong wood, but it'll be better than the particle board. Any real wood is better than particle board. If the pine starts to show wear, you could fix or replace pieces. If the particle board starts to break up, you can throw the whole bed away. And besides, figure a queen size bed is intended for two, and they have to allow for the fact that it might be two big people.

  3. pine

  4. unless the pine is really thin and the part. board really thick, solid wood will always be MUCH MUCH stronger!  (otherwise they'd only make particleboard, right?)

  5. although pine may be classified as a soft wood, it's still a durable wood.  any sort of solid wood would be stronger than particle board.  if you like the pine, go for it.  it will hold your weight much better than particle board.

  6. go with the pine bed mdf or particle is junk when it comes to furniture
