  1. critical thinking, which allows you to be an individual who uses reading, writing and rithmatic as tools to grasp larger concepts rather than being a container of information(memorization).

I think so.  There are also all kinds of different kinds of problems that need solving in life.  If one is always just given answers and facts, they might have head knowledge, but they don't always internalize it and make it their own.  By going through the process of really solving a problem, a child or adult will have greater understanding and then be able to hopefully apply that knowledge to other things.  We have been "classical homeschoolers" for seven years.  Just this past year we purchased a 12 acre farm so that we would have "real life" problems to solve.  It has been amazing to watch my 4 boys get interested in growing food, raising animals, and learning practical building skills...
