There are many sites that tell me that soy is extremely good for you. Then...there are other sites that say soy causes "shrinking of the brain" or "many disorders..." which one is true? Is it good or bad? I'm becoming a vegetarian, but I need protein. I thought soy would be perfect since I don't like beans or rice. Can somebody please help me?

  1. 1-2 servings of soy are joy. You shouldnt overdo anything. That said, you cant rely on just soy for protein. Try nuts, legumes, and beans are so versatile. You can put them in salad, make 'burgers', lots of things.

  2. I had this problem.  At first, I had some soy because it is supposed to be healthy.  Then I read an article bashing soy.  This scared me to eliminate soy.  Realistically, i highly doubt that soy is significantly bad at all.  I would reccommend adding small amounts of soy.  As long as you vary your diet and don't live on soy, it really isn't an issue.  Also, try to use beans & grains for protein.

  3. Soy is evil, as far as I am concerned.  Most soy has been genetically modified, and is not longer considered a natural food (google GMO soy for more info)  GMO soy is the LEADING cause of adult onset food allergies, which often go underdiagnosed, or diagnosed as other ailments, such as arthritis, autism, fibromyalgia, and many other "new" ailments, which did not bother people until the advent of GMO foods.  Because soy is the MOST GMO, it has been spliced with the DNA of many other plant species, including wheat, corn, even the venom of scorpions to make the crops more pest resistant.  I am highly allergic to soy, and due to heavy consumption of GMO soy (I didn't know any better), I am now also allergic to wheat and corn-a common situation for people who consumed alot of soy before it became so popular.  For your protein, you can easily use other, less questionable sources, such as quinoa, millet, flax, buckwheat, amaranth, etc., and other whole grains which are high in protein.  Also, try a type of bean you have never had before, such as October or cranberry beans-delicious!  I never cared for beans either, but I love them, as well as french lentils, red lentils, and other tasty protein sources.  Just do some research, and you will find plenty of options that are healthier than soy.  Good luck!

  4. Its not true, soy is ok.

  5. The way that Soy is prepared depends on whether it is bad or good for you. Look at the way that Asians consume it and have been consuming it for the past thousand or so years. They mainly eat fermented soy products and not the processed soy and soy isolate products that people eat here.

  6. Soy is Fine, but if you don't like soy try a grain called Quinoa pronounced "Keen Wah", and it is has the most protein content out of all the grains, and you cook it similar to the way you  would cook rice. It originates from South America, and back in the day the ruling powers thought that Quinoa made you stupid because all the poor people ate it. But now it is making a comeback, and it is actually pretty good.

If you do choose to try it, cook it in vegi stock (seasoned with salt) and add your favorite vegis, then season with lemon and flat leaf parsley or fresh oregano.  It has a flavor all its own...not like rice.

Protein intake is usually an issue for a lot of vegitarians in my opinion Quinoa beats tofu hands down.

    Good luck...Eat well

  7. Soy is a good thing- it's a perfect substitute for meat.

Soy is also a bad thing tho- it increases the risk of breast cancer and can slow development.

You can make your choice, but I have been a vegetarian for two years and have realized that eating soy is worth all the fuss. People make up a lot of stuff about it, but the facts I have given u are true, because my mom discussed this with my doctor before becoming a vegetarian.

    TRUST ME, IT'S WORTH IT!!!

  8. Soy has alot of protein, low fat, and low calories. It is good for you. Just in moderation. Don't have it at every meal and snack but meat substitutes, tofu and soy milk are just fine. No food is perfect. Look at carrots. They have Vitamin A, are low in calories, are considered a "negative" food because crunching can burn calories. But. But they CAN turn your skin orange. Is it likely? Is it bad to eat carrots? No. Moderation.
