  1. Spaying a cat is absolutely safe. I don't think you'll find a vet that does not recommend it. The process is surgical. They do go in and remove her "female organs." It will obviously prevent unwanted kittens, but it will also reduce the likely hood that she gets certain cancers, she will not go into heat, and she is less likely to run away.

  2. Spaying is a routine operation to remove the ovaries and uterus. Your vet will have performed this surgery many times previously and it's a very safe procedure.  I don't know where you live, but vets don't always perform the operation through the cat's stomach, sometimes they perform what is known as a "left lateral flank spay". Though not yet widely used in America, this technique is very common in the UK and Europe. Veterinarians have found that this procedure is more cost effective, time efficient, and safe for the cats. (This technique was originally developed for use on feral cats, who were going to be released into the wild within 48 hours of having the surgery.)

She'll be a little groggy when she comes home, but just put her somewhere warm and quiet where she can sleep off the effects of the anaesthetic.  She might not feel like eating that day, but make sure her food, water and litter are within easy reach for a day or so until she's fully recovered.

Spaying is probably the best thing anyone can do for their cat's health.  Not only will it prevent unwanted pregnancies but it will increase your cat's lifespan as it will eliminate the risk of her developing ovarian or mammary cancer later on in life.

This link has lots of information on how, when and why to spay your cat which you may find helpful.

Yes its pretty common and safe.

  4. Spaying your cat is very safe and is one the most important things you can do to enhance her health. When a cat is spayed, she is put under general anesthesia for surgery. An small incision is made on her tummy and her reproductive organs are removed. She is then stitched back up and will be ready to go home by the next morning. Most cats are drowsy from the anesthesia  and will be sore for a few days. Most recover nicely. Spaying your cat prevents her from developing cancers, diseases, and infections of the reproductive system. Spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies and miserable bouts with heat cycles.
