  1. Down town and the projects areas are, also, stay away from clubs, gambling joints.....

If you don't know the town, just steer clear of it or hire a trusted guide to take you where you can safely go.

  2. Some parts are, especially late at night.

  3. Parts of it are high in crime. You can get all the crime stats for each zip code off the St.Louis police web site. As in any big city you have to use common sense. Stay out of high crime areas after dark. There is no reason to be there. The tourist spots are fine as is a lot of the city except for north St.Louis and some spots in south city. Just be aware of your surroundings and be smart.

  4. Yes; it's one of the most violent and crime-ridden cities in the entire US.

  5. Below is what Wikitravel has to say about St. Louis, and this is aimed at tourists. If you are thinking of moving to St. Louis, as much as I hate to admit it, a lot of the north side of the city and some of the "state street names" part of south city are not where you want to be. And it's such a shame, as there are some really great homes and neighbors in those areas. But innocents have been hurt in drive-bys, and I had a friend sitting at a traffic light have a rock come through the windshield (now I have only heard of that one incident, so perhaps it's not typical). I feel confident driving in any area during the daytime, but not at night. For visiting, here's some thoughts that I would agree with:

St. Louis' recent designation as the Most Dangerous City in America should not deter the potential visitor -- vagaries in data collection and the city's fixed borders distort the true nature of the Gateway City's safety. Areas most often visited by tourists are no more dangerous than any other large American city. The more popular and most-visited areas in the city, such as Downtown, the Central West End, and Forest Park have very low crime rates, even for the Midwest.

Caution is warranted in other locales, particularly the North Side. The post-war exodus to the suburbs has taken a huge economic toll on this area, leaving many buildings abandoned, decaying, or demolished. East St. Louis, in Illinois, is also noted for a higher crime rate than the Missouri side (note this is not true of Alton or Belleville, in Illinois to the north and south). Most tourists, however, will have little reason to visit these places, so it should not present reason for much concern.

  6. i live in creve coeur i coud go outside rite now and be fine its 1130 avoid east st louis its worse than west philly or the hill in pittsburgh its baddd

  7. north side of the city of St. Louis is very dangerous, killings every night

  8. Just like any major city, there are parts that you avoid. In daylight and at night. I lived in StL most of my life until 3 years ago, and I lived in ther city and not once did I feel unsafe.

  9. No, but there are some areas that have some high crime rates. The reason St. Louis gets an unfair rate is that the City of St. Louis voted to secede from St. Louis County many years ago and become an independent city, so what this means is that when crimes happen in the city, they stay in the city and are not divided into the population of the metro area like other cities get to do, so instead of taking those crimes and adding the county crimes together and dividing them into the almost 3 million people in the area, the crimes get divided into only 350k people. St. Louis is no utopia, but its a lot safer than it appears. Down town St Louis is safer than most large cities down towns!

  10. yes it can be, certain neighborhoods are worse than others, especially at night

in 2004, not sure about 2008, St. Louis was ranked No. 1 on the most dangerous cities list

  11. NO. Unless you go north of downtown late at night.

  12. Yes, and it all depends when and where you are.  I'm trying to find a good paying job up there cause I live out in the sticks and if I do I'll probably carry a gun, I am only a 103lb. girl though.  Either way watch your back and get street smart or you'll get got!

  13. About the only "bad" area starts from about 2 blocks North of the Arch and goes all the way out to the Airport.
