  1. yes!!! 10 minutes sitting down should work...

  2. Make it two.

  3. Yes. It should be one minute for every year of age, then an explanation of why they were there, and if old enough, a discussion about what the consequence should be the next time and what the child could do to avoid being sent. It then ends with a hug.

  4. I would say it depends on the crime; for little things, one minute for each year of the child's age should suffice. For bigger things, a time-out probably isn't the best punishment option. So, an hour standing in corner would probably be unproductive and a waste of time. What child can stand still that long, anyway?

  5. yeah an hour is a little over the top.

  6. The corner period does not work. They stand there for 3 minutes, then what?? How does that show them that what they did was wrong? Spanking is completly wrong, also. I think the punishment should depend on the behavior. If there is company, sending them to their room works OK. But I think what really does the trick is taking away privleges, never toys because kids become emotionally attached to stuffed animals. But you have to give priveleges first. Things like Mcdonalds or getting a cheap toy for a small child, and stuff like a sleepover for an older kid. It should't be something like TV or video games because they don't count as priveleges.

  7. If the child is 30 yrs old then no it's not too much.

The rule of thumb is you double their age and that's how long they should stand in the naughty center.

I was being sarcastic with the 30 y/o in the corner.

Obviously after a certain age the "naughty center" doesn't have the same effect as it did when the child was 2-5 yrs old.. so every child is different.. so if your child is over 5 then only you know if the "corner" is still a working method of discipline.

  8. yes, sitting wouldn't hurt

  9. In my opinion, yes. If the child did something really bad then a different punishment should be considered.

  10. Definitely.  I've heard that you should only do that one minute per year of age... So if they are 7 years old, they should be in the corner for 7 minutes.

  11. Well it can be. To me this is a toss-up.  I think standing in the corner for an hour is going a littlle bit to far. However, on the other hand, an hour is the maximum time you can have your child stand in the corner if s/he is extremely naughty. I remember one time back when I was a kid, I was staying overnight at a friend's home, and he was also had his dorky step-brother at the house, and the 3 of us were getting out of hand, by making too much noise, and we were supposed to be sleeping, so the mother told us to come downstairs, and we had to stand in the corner for nearly an hour.  We sure did not like it, but it taught us a lesson to be quiet.

  12. Depends on the age of the child and the crime. I don't think it's that excessive but I'd probably try to come up with something else.

My son's father (who doesn't live with us - I'd never allow this in my house) used to make my son hold the push-up position for the same amount of minutes as his age - now THAT'S excessive!

  13. depending on how old the child is.  If the child is 3yrs. to 5 yrs, an hour will make you have to work harder because a child will not stand still that long!  Older kids from 6 to 8 will understand the consequences, but an hour is over doing it.  You will get better results doing short 5 minute time outs with smaller children. This will get the message across to the child that the behavior is unacceptable.  An hour will cause the child to be restless and you will find yourself having to discipline again while in the corner.  Children 6yrs to 8yrs.  10 min. would be better.

  14. Yes, an hour to a child is an eternity!  5 minutes should do.

  15. Yes.  Sitting, maybe not.
