Is static electricity dangerous? Why or why not?

Build up of static electricity can ignite combustible materials.  This is why most people who handle these types of materials must keep themselves and their equipment grounded to prevent a build up of static charge.  

To answer your question, static electricity can discharge (like when you get shocked from touching something) and cause a spark which can ignite combustible materials.

Depends on the charge.

Anything from a harmless shock from the tv screen to lightening I suppose. A harmless shock can also cause your car to catch fire while pumping gasoline, ruin a computer and other stuff :/

Static electricity can also fry a circuit board. Mostly that would have little impact except inconvience, but circuits are also used in medical equipment, airplanes, traffic signals, and other critical functions.
