I am single, no children and I just want to know if I can claim Head of Household to get a bigger refund. Is that kosher?

  1. There is no Head of  Household if it is just you...

  2. Head of household IS defined on the W-4 form and it's very clearly defined in a number of IRS documents - for example, at irs.gov, in Publication 17, in the instructions for form 1040A and 1040, and in Pub 501 that the W-4 refers you to if you have questions.

Head of household requires a dependent, among other rules you have to meet.

You file your W-4 and your tax return as single.

  3. Single no children is not head of household.  You MUST have a qualifying dependent.

Use single 1 or single 2.

PS, reread the W-4 form.  It's very clear that there are multiple requirements for claiming HOH, including have a dependent.
