Question:

Is structural integrity of a building affected by nearby excavation works in multiple sites for high-rises?

I'm currently living in a high-rise building (I'm afraid mentioning the city name will prejudice the responses). There are at least 6 construction sites for high-rises averaging 100 storeys within a 100m radius of my building. Their prgress ranges from piling works to already reaching the 30th floor. I constantly feel the vibration caused by heavy machinery drilling and piling. This has been the case for the past 2-3 years!

I'm wondering if all this drilling activity and vibrations can adversly affect the structural integrity of the building I'm living in. Let's say my building conforms to the least acceptable European standards.

  1. If you asking whether or not your building will collapse, probably not. Is it sustaining some type of structural degradation? Probably so but more in surface finishes like cracks. If you're located near a major water source such as a river or large body of water there is also the potential of existing structure movement (foundation components) as excavations occur close to your property.

  2. I know of no city that is even planning that many 100 story buildings that close together. Not even NYC.

But yes, it will have an effect. The structural engineers and city engineers are supposed to have that calculated carefully. Can they make a mistake? of course.
