Is studying abroad truly worth it?

Question

If you care to answer this, how can it be funded? Is it worth it to take out large sums of money as loans only to pay them back into my mid 30s? Does a semester/summer/break abroad actually look good on a resume?

Study abroad is a great experience. Especially if you put it to good use. It's always sad to see some kids study abroad for the sake of it, taking the general education class ones (rather than a program that relates to their major) just to go out of the country and get hammered. Make the use of it. You can drink anywhere. Go out of the country and truly soak up the cultural differences of the place you visit and, if possible, take a program that relates to your future profession. Not only will you get the experience of a lifetime, but it will be amazing for your resume and something you can talk about in job interviews.

i think it's definitely worth it because at the minimum you'll have that experience of being immersed in a different culture than your own and i totally agree with daddyslittlegirl. there are scholarships available and financial aid can be used toward it. also study abroad programs that your university sponsors are usually much cheaper than those from private SA companies like CIEE or IES, especially if you are an out-of-state student paying out-of-state tuition. the program i did was sponsored by my university and was less than $1000 more than what i was paying for tuition, room & board, fees, etc. of a regular semester at my university. and yes it does look good on your resume

Depends on where you are and where you want to study.

I know that many Canadian students come here (Australia) to study. The fees and cost of living is less than back home and the qualifications are recognised over there. Do some research for yourself.

Every friend and acquaintance I've ever known to have gone and studied abroad has said the experience was truly worth it.   I never did it, and I regret it.
