Is surfing a good way to make friends?

On the beach, maybe in the water, not really.  Locals can be ***holes when you happen into what they think is their territory!  I'm sure it differs from place to place but its what I remember about a number of locations.  At the surf shops you will make friends but it is an individual sport and not a team sport and making friends is not the important thing to most.

Yep ; but no more than any other sport or hobby .

  If you want to get into anything , do it for the right reasons . If you dont you won't enjoy it and that will eventually show out in a negative attitude , not the best way to make friends.

yes! when waiting for a wave, surfers usually talk with each other. its a great way to make friends and learn new things.

yes, you meet new people, some give you tips (great tips) on what to improve or how to do a new trick, you get to talk story with the old folks, i grew up surfing even though my bestfriend and i never lived close or went to the same schools me and her grew up on the same beach since we were 4 , its great you'll make good friends, just have respect and smile

If your a local and you meet up with other locals while surfing then yes. But if your not a local some people can be pretty rude. But I still believe it is an excellent way to meet people. It just depends on the place.
