Is surfing in cancun almost as popular as it is in hawaii?

Last summer i went to Hawaii and enjoyed surfing at Waikiki Beach. This summer I'm going to Cancun and I hope that surfing is big there or that the beaches are at least bright and safe enough for it.

I've been to Cancun many times and never seen anyone surfing.  The waves just aren't big enough down there, but there are plenty of other things you can do to occupy your time.

Not even close to Waikiki.  You have long rolling waves in Waikiki that are easy to catch.  Different situation in Cancun (surf is on the open ocean side a few miles south or north) where you have larger Gulf or Caribbean chop surf and sometimes difficult rip conditions during part of the season when it breaks.  Board rentals are available.  By the way, I believe there is also a wave machine for surfing in a park there.
