Not entirely. One conventional energy source is sustainable. That is hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric power comes from rain, which comes from solar energy, which is sustainable.

Interestingly, hydroelectric power was the very first large scale power source in the United States and was developed by Edison Electric at Niagara Falls.

One other sustainable source that has been around for a very long time but has never been fully exploited is Geothermal power. There the heat in the earth is used to generate steam to power a generator. It is actually part of the conventional power grid but many people consider it alternative because it has not been used as much as it could be.

Most other sustainable energy sources such as Wind, Solar, Tidal, Wave, and Biofuel are currently considered alternative.
