so here is some back ground.

my son is 5 and a half. he has been going to an indoor swim school for almost 1.5 months. in 2 weeks the class is over and we have the option of :

1. continuing his lessons right away or

2. having him skip the next swim class which is 2 months and then going to the next one.

would a 2 month break from swim school make him regress? for example if he skips 2 months will it be like starting all over again when he does go back?

  1. do not skip. keep it going!

  2. No, he wont start all over again. But its better for him to learn to be focused in one thing.Dont skip.

  3. continue his lessons the sooner he learns to swim the better.....

  4. What's the benefit in skipping? Unless there is one then don't let him skip anything.

Howeves yeah, swimming is lieven better than running a bike but he hasn't learned to swim yet.

Mind you I can teach a 5 year old to swim in two sessions so I am not sure what the months of "schooling" are for.

But I guess you get them banana "approved" teachers and the "approved" lessons in "approved" surroundings paying good money for each lesson, lol  I'd take him to the seaside instead.

  5. if he's enjoying the classes and it's convenient for you to take him to them, then he should really carry on.  if you take a break, he probably won't forget the techniques, but may lose confidence through not swimming in the meantime.

you should try and take him for regular swims during the break if possible just to keep his confidence up.

his muscles will probably weaken over the break a little, so he may find that he gets more tired for the first two or three sessions when he comes back.

like any sport, the more he practices, the better he will get - but he isn't likely to forget how to do things he has done before, he may just find them a little more challenging if he hasn't done them for a while.

in other words, yeah, it's pretty much like riding a bike, and as long as he doesn't lose too much confidence through taking a break there's no harm in it.

  6. it will be like riding a bike. no regress here.

  7. it's better that you keep him on swimming lessons first before having him skip because i'm sure he'll start all over again.

he cannot progress and if so, it will be a long process. except if your son is a fast learner.

  8. don't skip. i have a 4 yr old. i skipped and now he's terrified of the water. it was like starting over again for me.

  9. Whatever. Just don't try swimming in the road

  10. depends on him

  11. I was a lifeguard/swimming instructor for 3 years. Swimming is like riding a bike, even just the basics. I had several children take one class a summer and then the next year they were ready to move on...not forgetting what they learned the year before. However, it is good for them to continue with the lessons. The lessons help with endurance and strength for future lessons.

I hope this helps you! :)

  12. at five yea it would

  13. It depends on him.  My kids, for example love the water.  BUT  when they do things that scare them, like a roller coaster for example, they forget how much they loved it over the year between rides, and are scared all over again.

If your child is just a go-getter and comfortable and fearless, I'd have no trouble waiting a few months.  It's not like he's in training for the olympics or diving competition.  It IS like riding a bike, he won't forget how to do the things he already knows, which is not going to be more than the basics anyhow.

Also, the kids I babysit (and my own lol) swim all summer, then of course not all fall through spring.  Believe me, they NEVER have trouble jumping right in when the pool opens up again.  If you are really concerned, take him to a pool once or twice during the break.  We check into a hotel over the winter just to swim, for fun, some years.

  14. uuh yup its lyk riding a bike you dnt forget it ...sometimes probably forgeting some strokes or skills but thats for like athletes if he jst wants to swim then let him continue

i dnt think he'll go back...if he still remembers then no :D
