Is swimming really that popular in Australia?

The guys on TV keep saying that great swimmers are the big stars in Australia. That seems weird to me since in the US we only see these athletes once every four years and them forget about them. I kind of wish we did see more of these sports on prime-time TV.

Swimming is one of the more high profile sports in Australia. The World Championships, Pan Pacs, Commonwealth Games and Nationals are all well televised - usually in Prime Time.
